Lengthy train of thought about a multitude of issues. Be warned, I have "controversial" views you may not agree with (:
So there's a "controversial"
piece floating around on SMH - some people totally espouse her views, others just argue that she's spouting rubbish. I myself don't know what to think, I do think some of her words are harsh but true. However I do know that I am going to uni because I want to make my own future in order to 1) [hopefully] do something awesome for one bit of society, 2) ultimately not to depend on someone else financially because...if I can support myself, then why the hell not!
Yet I'm a bit astounded to know that girls in the 1950's went on to take further education for getting a partner! Of course if you're interested in getting a family of your own sometime in the future, it's nice to get a partner...but to go to college / uni for the sole purpose of finding a well-off decent guy you can later make your hubby later on?!! I don't quite understand. Sadly, there's still a plethora of male chauvinist pigs around (sorry if you take offense, I don't mean everyone, but come on, it's an ubiquitous notion - there are always
some dickheads in every historical period). I'm like the female version of
Also I know this is also another point of controversy: women quitting their jobs to become full-time mums and look after their kids while the hubby is the breadwinner (oh, tradition!). I don't quite grasp that concept either (I've been "influenced" / brainwashed from reading feminist discourse about the lack of a fulfilling life if you're always carrying out domestic duties) but who knows? Maybe I may change my mind in the future... I don't know. And isn't there a 'myth' that women can't have it all - family and work?
Anyway I digress. I always end up jabbering away so much about things I feel strongly about, and feminism is one of those issues...oh no, I feel myself going back to jabbering, but screw it, here's the ensuing train of thought - is feminism still relevant now, in the 21st century? A lot of generation X / Y'ers (whatever generation I'm in) apparently don't like to think they're feminists, namely because of the stereotype perpetuated by earlier feminists (who were freaking awesome in my opinion, and used brute force to get the rights we ultimately have today as females). In essence, they're fearful of being labelled "feminist" in a scornful tone, since it elicits negative connotations about who they are and their identity, but yet they do share the same beliefs of having equal pay for equal work, sex discrimination and so forth.
Yet there's also something called "raunch culture" - something I personally have a strong aversion to. I can't be bothered to explain it, but I'm pretty sure that everyone is aware of this notion, but just didn't know its name. It's highly prevalent in our society, and I think it's a pretty shit form of so-called "empowerment". Can't girls find empowerment through some other way? But yet the irony of this issue is that feminism also has some doctrine where females can do whatever they want with their bodies, no one can dictate what they can or cannot do - Slut Walk, for example (alright I espouse that one). Anyway I'll end my rant (?) / train of thought here because I've exhausted my brain...
My pet peeve:
I'm a grammar Nazi / spelling Nazi. I hate it when people have insufficient grasp of the English language, especially if their first language is English. I was doing group work with someone today and I corrected countless spelling and grammatical errors to the point I was thinking: "
I judge you so much! You don't even proofread your own work!"
- Professional spelt proffesinal (*silent tear*)
- Reassignments spelt reassighnments
-
Perceived spelt percieved (*cringe*)
I also judge people who can't tell the difference between:
- Its and it's
- There, their, they're
- You're and your
- Bare and bear
- Affect and effect
- Then and than
- Complement and compliment
- Loose and lose (far out, it's not "I want to loose ___")
- Principal and principle
- Could have, would have, should have (what the flying f--- is this shit:
could of, would of, should of ?!)
I think it's the worse when journalists can't tell the difference and thus it makes them sound really...uneducated. I cringe whenever I see people make these mistakes...
Okay last point, I second Bitter's frustration with Cityrail....today was definitely a major fuck up for trains - how is it that other countries can maintain better system control / have barely any overhead wiring problems when Sydney is frequently plagued by these issues?
So that was a lengthy post, and no nothing bad happened to me today, I'm not having a particularly shitty day, I'm not angsty or PMS-ing (*rolls eyes*), this was all my train of thought. Till next time!
